Saranac River

St. Regis Canoe Outfitters

This is a 4-5 hour downstream paddle to the top of Permanent Rapids. There is some current and one easy Class I rapid. We start out the trip going slowly so that we can spend time making sure everyone is comfortable in gently moving current.  Pine Street Rapids is a short rapid of the easiest grade of whitewater.   We have novice paddlers do it  "every day". This trip is surprisingly beautiful, with views of Mt Baker, the McKensie Wilderness, Moose Mtn and Whiteface Mtn. Although this trip parallels Rt 3, it has a wild feel to it and it is a great trip to see wildlife, poking along the shore. We've seen mink, otter, herons, and we have even had a moose cross the river in front of us. We stop for lunch on a beautiful bluff overlooking the river.

We recommend  Nova Craft canoes, or plastic kayaks for this trip as there are no portages. It very conveniently starts right at our location on the shore of the Saranac River. Our van will return you to the starting point at our main base in Saranac Lake.
