"Healing Woods": Middle Saranac Lake & Weller Pond

St. Regis Canoe Outfitters

Martha Reben (born Martha Rebentisch, 1906-1964), author of The Healing Woods, The Way of the Wilderness and A Sharing of Joy,  camped on Weller Pond from 1931 to 1941 and Middle Saranac Lake from 1942 to 1955 with Fred Rice as her guide. Martha came to Saranac Lake as a tuberculosis patient in 1927 at the age of 22.  After three and a half years of treatment she sought out guide Fred Rice to take her camping on Weller Pond in hopes of healing through her exposure to the outdoors.  She immersed herself in nature with the woods, water and wildlife becoming her world.  She kept a journal for more than twenty years resulting in three books which are filled with lyrical, fascinating and accurate observations of her Adirondack world.  Martha recovered her health, but struggled with her frailty until her death at the age of 58.

This is a 4-5 hour kayak trip including Middle Saranac Lake & Weller Pond.  The historic guided trip includes information on Martha Reben's world and the healing woods of Saranac Lake.  Beautiful beaches and islands offer opportunities for swimming.  Plenty of opportunities for viewing wildlife.
